type='text'>Chiefs slip by Rams 7-6

The Chiefs locked up a play-off spot last night with a win over the Rams 7-6. Ipswich stayed hot with the bats and plated the first 5 runs of the game over 4 innings against Rowley's starter Katin. Dave Shoreman pitched the first three scoreless innnings for the Chiefs but had to leave in the fourth when he aggravated a recent hamstring strain. He was relieved by Andy Workman who pitched well for the next 2 and 2/3 innings. The Rams however, were able to get one back in the fourth and four more in the 6th (2 earned). Greg Doucette relieved Workman with two outs and two on in the sixth and came up with a huge strike out to end the inning and the threat. The Rams were not done yet and after a scoreless top of the seventh, Rowley was able to plate one more in the bottom of the inning when Ralph Renzulli (2-4, 2B, 2 RBIs) drove in a man from second. Doucette was able to close the door on the next batter and induced a weak grounder to the mound to end the game and send the Chiefs to the playoffs.

The Chiefs offense was paced by Sotiopoulos, Montecalvo, Radzim and Dawley who all had two hits each. Shoreman hit his 8th home run of the year in the third inning as well. The Chiefs finish tonight at home with the final game of the series and the ITL season against Rowley. The Rams need the win to secure a playoffs spot, while an Ipswich win will send Hamilton-Wenham into the fourth spot.

Ipswich over Manchester-Essex 4-2

Ipswich moved one step closer to securing a playoff berth on Saturday morning with a win over ME. Early word is the Dylan dislocated his thumb out of the socket.

Dave Shoreman got the nod for the home town team going a complete game scattering 4 hits, striking out 9, walking 6, while also hitting one batter twice.

The Chief's started the hit parade off of HW's starter Jensen, with 4 runs in the 1st off of Dylan Durning's first Homerun of the year. Andy Knox would follow a few batter's later with a sac fly to center scoring Tom Radzim.

In the 2nd inning Shoreman would start the inning off with two straight walks of General hitters, and O'Leary would take Shoreman yard to left to bring the score to 4-3 Chiefs. The Chief's would get back a run in the bottom of the inning, and then in the 3rd Kevin Michael would hit his first home run of the year to center, making the score 6-4 after 3 full.

The Generals would tack on 1 in the 5th, and one in the 6th off a Mark Provost double to left. Knoting the score at 6.

Shoreman in the top of the 7th would have a 1-2-3 inning. The Chief's started off the inning with Durning leading off on a double. A walk to Radzim, and then to Ryan Montecalvo. Michael would strike out with the bases loaded for the 1st out with bases still loaded. On a 1-2 count, Durning took off for home. The high pitch would get away from General catcher Bryan Vitale, and Durning would be safe at home for the win.

Durning was down for about a minute, and would soon get up holding his hand. The Chief's offense was led by Brian Dowley making his first start of the season at third and went 2-3 at the plate.

The Chief's started out in the 2nd inning with 2 runs in two hits. Radzim led off the inning with a walk, and then advanced to third on a Kevin Michael double down the left field line. Brian Dowley had a SAC fly to center to score Radzim. Matt Lane would drive in Michael on a fielder's choice.

There wouldn't be any more scoring until the bottom frame of the 4th, when Lobdelo would reach on an error at third. He would later score on a Ben Hathaway double . Driscoll would then reach on a base hit to right, and would then score on a Travers triple to left, leaving the game tied at 2.

The Torries would tack on two more in the bottom of the 5th, with a Lobdelo base hit scoring Lampkin and Hathaway who reached on a double and single respectfully. The Chief's would make it interesting in the top half of the 7th. Matt Lane was second up in the inning, and had a base hit to right, Sotiropoulos would reach on a walk, and would score on a fielders choice by Andy Knox. The bases would be loaded again with 2 outs in the top of the 7th, but the Chief's bats were unable to tie the game and suffered their third loss of the year.

The Chief's are home Monday to face off against Hamilton-Wenham, and the Torries travel to Essex on Tuesday. Don Burke and his brother Bob Burke were the founders of the Chiefs that year.

Don Burke had recently completed a brief professional minor league baseball career in the Brooklyn and then Los Angeles Dodgers organization in the late 1950s.

Upon returning home and settling in Ipswich, he joined his brother Bob, who was an education teacher at Ipswich High School.

“He raised the money and I got the players,” said Don. “I came back from playing pro ball, and there was a big softball league at that time in the area. After the softball games, we’d round up guys and tell them about the team. Mike Singer was one of these guys, and once I got Mike, he helped me get other guys.”

The No. 1 rule for the Ipswich Chiefs then was that each player must be a resident of Ipswich. The “resident” rule for another team is what created the Chiefs, in fact.

“My grandfather, John Burke, had played for the Rowley team in the Intertown League, and both my brothers and I also played for them,” said Don. “We lived in Ipswich, so we couldn’t play for Rowley anymore, so we started our own team.”

Singer played on that first Chiefs team in 1959 and stayed with the Chiefs into the early 1970s. Afterwards, Singer became the Umpire-in-Chief of the ITL. Nowadays, he’s among the Chiefs’ biggest fans.

“It’s a great tradition. I go every Monday night to the games. Naturally, I’ve stopped playing, but I love to watch the Chiefs play,” said Singer.

Chief's on Facebook!

Check out the Ipswich Chief's group page on Facebook!!!

Keep up to date with all the off-season Hot Stove action!

Opening Day is May 25th!!!

Chiefs Sweep The Rams 3-2

The Ipswich Chiefs continued the winning ways, with a three game sweep of the Rowley Rams in their final meeting of the season.

In a well played game all around by both teams. Kevin Smolla and Mike Blaise combined for 86 years! Smolla had some issues but was able get back to the young buck he once was. Smolla was able to complete 4 innings, scattering 11 hits, 7 runs, 2 walks, and struck out 4. Dave Doucette threw the final 3 frames and kept the Rams hitless, while walking 1.

The Chiefs offense was led by Anthony Hernandez who was 2 for 4 at the plate and driving in 3 Chiefs. Andy Knox also added a 3 for 4 night and drove in a run. Ryan Montecalvo, Dylan During, and David Shoreman all added RBI's. Shoreman was also hit twice this evening. There was also a Chiefs first tonight, during the 3rd inning Montecalvo was stung by a bee during his at bat.

Tomasz, Thibault, and McDonald all chipped in with two hits a piece for the visiting Rams. The visiting Chiefs went into Patton Park looking for another win to keep the streak alive.

The game started off in the right direction for the Chiefs as Rick Sotoropolous led off the game with a home run to right to take the lead, and the Chiefs were able to plate one more run in the first. The Chiefs were able to plate three runs in the second with 2 RBI's going to David Shoreman would drove them in off his double to the left field gap. Anthony Hernandez and Andy "Sticks" Knox both contributed 1 RBI a piece.

Chris Lane (W 6IP, 1H, 1R, 2K, 3BB) set the pace for the Chiefs on the mound. Lane carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the 6th until a 0-1 change up stayed up in the zone to Jered Stewart which was taken into the willow tree in left. type='text'>Topsfield 6 - Chiefs 5

Monday night at Linebrook field saw a back and forth battle with Ipswich battling the Torries of Topsfield.

Kevin Smolla put in a valent effort for the hometown club leaving the game tied at 4 a piece. Chris Lane came on to try and perserve the lead but was unable to handle the task. Lane let up a sacrafice fly in the 5th to score the 5th Torries run.

The Chiefs fought back from one run down in the bottom of the 5th, to bring the game back to 5-5. In the top of the 7th the Torries would score another run and lock in the win for them. Lane let up a basehit with the bases loaded to plate Brian Greene for the winning run.

The Chiefs again played well defensively and Smolla had an effective outing. But Lane couldn't hold off the Topsfield bats. Setting the table for the Chiefs offensivley were Tom Radzim (2-3 3-Run Homerun 2 Runs Scored) Ricky Sotoropolus (2 Hits), Dylan During (Double).

The Chiefs look to rebound the loss on Friday night at Proctor Field in Topsfield.

Chiefs Shutout Manchester-Essex 2-0

The fans at Linebrook Park Monday night saw a fantastic game which saw solid pitching from both sides, stellar defense, and some late inning heroics.

Chris Lane (W 7IP, 2H, 6K,2BB) took the mound for the Chiefs, and was able to perserve the 2 hit shut-out, with some of the best defense the Chiefs have played in a long time. Ryan Montecalvo, Matt Lane, and Ant Hernandez all contributed with fantastic plays in the field. With Lane going into the third base line fence to make a sprawling catch. Manchester not to be undone made some fantastic plays of thier own, with a great catch in DEEP center off the bat of David Shoreman. Although Shoreman was robbed of at least a triple, he would later make up for it at the plate.

With both pitcher's battling through out the game, it wasn't until the bottom of the 6th. Rick Sotoropolous lead off the inning with a four pitch walk, which brought Shoreman to the plate. After taking a monstrous hack at an off speed pitch, he settled in, and drove the next pitch over the wall in left for a two-run job. Putting the Chiefs up 2-0 going into the 7th.

Lane would run into some trouble in the top have of the 7th. When Nate Bertolino led off the inning with a double. Lane would then walk a batter with two outs to have runners on 1st and 3rd but was able to get the final out without letting up a run.

The win puts the Chiefs at the .500 mark, with a record of 5-5-1. They travel to Essex Tuesday night.

Game Called Tonight

Tonight's match up between Ipswich and Rowley has been called due to weather, and poor field conditions.

Make up game to be scheduled at a later day.

Ipswich will travel to Rowley on Wednesday night.

Chief's Sponsor of the Week: Marcorelle's Wines and Liquors!

After each home game there's only one place the Chief's go for their after game refreshment! It was a full 7 inning battle for both teams. Tied 6-6 until the bottom of the 5th with two down in the home half Matt Lane doubled to right center. With Andy Knox pinch running for Lane that set the table for another comeback player in right fielder Travis Doty. Down 1-2 after fighting off a couple pitches Doty used some opposite field power to hit in into the trees in right field at Linebrook for the Chiefs to take a 8-6 lead. The Chiefs would take another run in the bottom half of the 6th. In the visitors half of the 7th The Townies scored to cut the lead to 9-8 with one out and runners on second and third. The Chiefs needed to bring the infield in with just one out to try and protect the lead against Brock Currier. Currier lined a ball at shortstop Ryan Montecalvo who quickly threw to Anthony Hernadez covering third for the double play to end it.

The win split the first half series with The Townies. The Chiefs have four days off before defending the Reservation Friday night against Beverly. Game starts at 5:45 hope to see everyone there.

Chiefs Fall Short to HW

On Monday night the Chiefs dropped their second game of the year to the Generals of H-W 7-4, at a warm Linebrook Field.

Chiefs Top Torries in the 7th

The Chiefs faithful watched a great game Monday night as the Chiefs topped The Torries 5-4 with some late inning magic.

Chris Lane and Bradly Eaton shared the pitching duties Monday night with Lane going 4 innings, and Eaton finishing up the job for his first win of the season. The defense of Ryan Montecalvo and Matt Lane was stellar in making some nice defensive plays and turning two double plays through out the game. M. Lane (2-3) also had a nice 2 for 3 day at the plate. Dave Shoreman (1-3, rbi), Dylan During (1-3), and Tom Radzim (2-3) also added to the hits to help the Chiefs win.

With the score tied 4-4 in the bottom of the 7th, Dylan Durning got on with a lead off double. Which brought come back kid Gardy O'Flynn to the plate who smoked a line drive down left field line that hooked the foul pole perfectly to secure the walk off win for the Chiefs.

The Chiefs move to 2-1 on the season and will travel to Topsfield on Friday night for the second game of the series with the Torries. Hope to see you all there.

Are the Chiefs Going Green???

Well not environmental that is...The Boys of Summer from the Linebrook Reservation will be sporting some new uni's this coming season. So he does what's necessary - within limits, of course.

"I drive a little faster than I should at times (to make it to the games)," said Shoreman. "But for the most part, my employer is understanding. It works out."

Shoreman, 28, an Ipswich High graduate who played at Colby-Sawyer College, is in his 10th season with the Chiefs, who won the ITL regular season title with a 17-7 record.

The Chiefs roster is largely composed of players in their 20s, but this season they also have a just-turned-30 shortstop in Ryan Montecalvo, plus an effective 40-year-old pitcher in Kevin Smolla.

The image of beer-swilling guys who trip over themselves and make a mockery of the game is alien to this team. This isn't about arrested development, nor is it a nostalgia trip for the players. Like many other players in the ITL, the Chiefs are serious about baseball and they're willing to make sacrifices to honor their commitment to the team.

"Some of the guys have odd working hours, or they have family obligations or they're recently married - there are a lot of things on our plate," said Jim Bodwell, 26, who is happy to see that one of his former Ipswich High teammates, Brad Eaton, has developed into an outstanding pitcher (7-0 in the regular season) for the Chiefs.

"It's all about the love of the game for us," added Bodwell, who is engaged and commutes to Lowell for his job. "When you get toward the end of the season like this, there are always a lot of question marks. What will next year bring? Which guys won't be back? That's why the next (playoff) game is so important. Some guys may never pick up a glove again, so it feels special to go on the diamond with these guys. We have the honor of representing Ipswich in the playoffs."

Even before Ipswich lost to Hamilton, 4-2, last night to close out its playoff run, Bodwell said he's coming back next year. He wants to be part of an Ipswich team that captures an ITL championship, like the 2003 edition did. Bodwell was on that team but missed the playoff clincher because he was doing an internship in Jacksonville, Fla.

"I'd say this is the second best Ipswich team I've been on," said Bodwell. "We had the great team in 2003 and the nucleus is still around, but last year was tough. Our season just came to a screeching halt last year and I think we all walked away with a bad taste in our mouths. I would attribute our success this year to our attitude. We go out looking to play hard and have fun."

Ipswich was blessed with pitching depth this season. Chris Lane and Eaton ate up a lot of innings and the Chiefs also relied on a young pitcher, Dave Doucette, who goes to St. Joseph's College in Maine, along with Smolla, who is something of an inspiration to his younger teammates.

"Smolla came back after not playing for 4-5 years because this team means a lot to him," said Shoreman. "He's 40 years old and he still gets hitters out. If I'm 40, I don't know that I would be even thinking about playing, but it says a lot about Kevin that he's still playing."

Offensively, Chris Zaremba, Andy Workman, Bodwell and Montecalvo were among the leaders "but we've all had a pretty decent year," said Shoreman.

Montecalvo remains a catalyst at shortstop and is viewed as a team leader. A former baseball, hockey and soccer captain at the Pingree School in Hamilton, Montecalvo can hardly believe he's been with the Chiefs for 12 years. He now works in Salem, N.H., lives in Amesbury and he and his wife have a one-year-old son, Tyler. Montecalvo is well aware of his priorities and is just grateful that he can still play with guys he's known his entire life.

"We grew up together and a lot of us are still playing together," said Montecalvo, who also plans to return next year. "We couldn't do this unless we had understanding families who recognize how much we love the game. With everything going in our lives, it's definitely a commitment. Every year you think maybe it's going to be the last time you play, but something drives you back. If you still have the ability, it's hard to give up."

Word from the Skip... 7/11/07

Game tonight against Topsfield is on as planned.

5:45 at Ipswich

Chiefs Top Torries

Brad Eaton moves to 6-0 on the season as he pitched 4 scoreless innings of baseball against a testy Torries squad to beat them 11-0. Sometimes he can even be spotted rink side, as he and Happy Gilmore have slap shot competitions to see who exactly the more accurate shot. Also Tribe Fans he is currently in the midst of planning a social event on Monday July16th as he ushers himself into a new decade.

He looks forward to the future when his most crowning achievement will be to pass the #16 jersey along to his son Tyler Jason who at this time is still torn between hockey skates and a baseball glove, not that he is really old enough to tell the difference between the two but we'll get back to you on that. Shoreman is the Chiefs’ second-longest tenured player, after 11-year player Ryan Montecalvo, who also helped Shoreman and Greenleaf on last year’s league runner-up.
Shoreman and Montecalvo (along with many others on the team) were also members of the 2003 Intertown Twilight League champion Chiefs.
“It doesn’t matter who we run out there [in each game] — everybody likes playing with each other on the team and we play as a team,” said Shoreman, of the 2007 team that has started out at 6-1 and in first place. “It’s a tribute to these guys. Myself and Ryan are the two [longest-tenured], and there’s a bunch of guys in for six to eight years.”
Shoreman salutes Greenleaf for setting up a winning mentality for him to work from.
“This is [Greenleaf]’s first year not being here, but he did a tremendous job of running the team for 15-plus years,” said Shoreman, a former player for Colby-Sawyer College. “It’s a great bunch of guys who want to play on the team and come out and have fun.
“When I was 18, did I think I’d still be playing? Absolutely not,” Shoreman added. “I think it’s different now that I’m kind of running the team.”
There’s not much to managing the team, however. Everyone knows what they’re doing out there, as judged by the team averaging between five and 10 hits per game this year.
“It’s just playing ball,” he added. “With the exception of five or six new guys, we’ve all been together for six and seven years.”
The names are familiar to anyone who’s shown up at 5:45 p.m. every Monday night from early June through late July (not including playoffs) since about 2001 — Tom Radzim, Dylan Durning, Chris Zaremba, Chris Lane, Brad Eaton, Andy Workman, Jim Bodwell.
“Everyone clicks and I love to see that,” said Shoreman. “I love the fact that the young guys keep coming out and keep wanting to play.”
Players like Chris Doucette, Patch Barton, Brian Wolfe and James Lampropoulos (tri-captain of the 2005 Ipswich High state champion basketball team) are all making contributions this year as newer Chiefs.

Taking out the Townies
Rockport is generally considered the Chiefs’ arch-nemesis (“They’ve beaten us in the finals the past umpteen years”), but the Townies was the team walking away disappointed two days straight earlier in the week.
On June 17, any Chiefs who happen to be fathers got a nice gift by picking up a 7-5 win at Rockport on Father’s Day. The very next evening, the Chiefs’ offense exploded for 13 runs in a 13-2 damaging defeat of the Townies at Bialek Park.
Zaremba hit a pair of home runs and Radzim added another, while Eaton (six innings) and Shoreman (one inning) combined for the win on the mound.
A day later, Chris Lane pitched a complete game in holding the Townies to two runs (one earned) and striking out 10 Rockport hitters.
Zaremba added two more home runs, sending a pair of baseballs onto the train tracks next to Bialek Park. He went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, while Radzim was 4-for-4, Eaton was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Andy Knox was 2-for-3 with the game-tying RBI and he brought another run in for two on the day.
The team battles Beverly back at Bialek Park on Friday evening at 5:45 p.m. and they’re at Beverly on Sunday evening at the same time. Monday night’s home opponent will be Rowley.

Chief's 4th serves too much for the Townies

In a game where Ipswich had to battle from one run down they took the series sweep with a 13-2 win of Rockport Monday night at Linebrook field.

The Ipswich fans were in full support of its favorite boys of summer. As the Chief's moved to 5-1 in ITL action, beating the Townies 7-5.

Brad Eaton took to the hill in search of another victory, throwing 6 strong to earn the win. The "Skip" Dave Shoreman threw a scoreless 7th to preserve the victory for the Chief's. Leading the way for the Tribe tonight was Chris Zaremba who had two homeruns to lead the offense. Tommy Radzim also adding his second long ball of the season taking Brent Currier to center.

The Chief's return home to the reservation tomorrow night after two on the road. It was also in that 6th inning where the Tribe from Linebrook belted 3 homeruns. The hit parade started with the game dead locked at three when Tommy Radzim hit a shot into the little league diamond to take the lead. Then Jimmy "Salty" Bodwell also joined the fun going by going the other way to left. And lastly "Shootah" Dave Shoreman stroked a ball to left center almost taking out the centerfielder for the Orioles over on the little league diamond to cap off the 11 run 6th.

Hits came early for the Chief's as in the 1st Dylan During showed off his opposite field power sending a ball into the trees in right. After that it turned into a pitchers duel as HW's starter would keep the bats for the home team quiet for 4+ innings. Andy Workman got the call tonight for Ipswich throwing 6 solid innings, giving up six hits, yielding 3 runs, and struck out six Generals. Workman tipped his cap and gave way to Chris Lane who pitched a scoreless 7th.

These two meet again on Thursday on Hamilton-Wenhams battle field Patton Park.
